Warriors have 2 DPS specs.  For a long time, though, people might argue they really didn’t.  When asked what spec to use for raiding DPS in the past, the answer was always simple:  Fury.  Going with an Arms build was an easy way to open yourself up to brilliant insults in the vein of “L2P.”  It was a cruel, cruel world for Arms warriors in PvE, forever relegated to the PvP spec.

When Wrath hit, people who loved the Arms play style had high hopes for the spec.  Fun new tools like Bladestorm and Sudden Death sounded like the perfect cure for a broken PvE spec.  Well, I can say from experience that Arms was huge, HUGE fun for the leveling game.  I wouldn’t take a warrior to 80 any other way.  In raiding though, it still took a backseat (way, way in the back) to a Fury spec.

3.1 hit, and everything changed.  Titan’s Grip took a mighty wallop from Ye Olde Nerf Bat.  At the same time, Arms got a healthy boost all around.  So now the question that hovers around the official boards and beyond is this:  Fury or Arms for raiding?

My simple answer is this:  Arms is better at lower gear levels, and Fury evens up and then pulls away as you approach BIS gear.

For more details, let’s carry on and look at the strengths and weaknesses of each spec.

Arms Strengths

  • Excellent single target DPS, some multi target DPS with Bladestorm and Sweeping Strikes
  • Very, very active, many different “buttons to push” if you like that sort of thing
  • You only need ONE uber two handed weapon
  • Requires less expertise through gear to reach the cap

Arms Weaknesses

  • Weaker (than fury) DPS in multi target situations
  • Perhaps TOO active for some, long priority list (Rend, Execute, Overpower, Mortal Strike, Slam – in that order)
  • You don’t look quite as cool with only ONE giant weapon

Fury Strengths

  • Very, very good single target DPS – excellent multi target damage as well
  • Active, but not quite as many things to keep track of (Whirlwind, Bloodthirst, Slam Proc, HS > 50 rage)
  • Nothing looks quite as badass as a TG Fury Warrior with nice weapons

Fury Weaknesses

  • Single target DPS less than Arms (at least at lower gear levels)
  • Some consider the rotation boring
  • Must gear and gem for more expertise
  • Really need 2 excellent weapons to thrive

It’s like I said before, Arms, IMO, is better until you have some really nice gear for Fury.  If you’re just starting out raiding, or if you’re mostly wearing Naxx 10 gear or thereabouts, you’ll probably do better as an Arms warrior.  Arms spec relies a bit less on gear.  As gear improves, however, Fury catches up and eventually surpasses Arms.  Fury Warriors scale very, very well with gear, but it takes time to get there.  Let me give you a real world example.

Before 3.1, I out DPSd our Arms warrior every time.  Even when he had better gear, I out DPSd him.  Once I got better gear than him, it got even worse.  After 3.1, the story has changed.  Our gear right now is roughly equal, and he is almost always beating me.  You may look at my gear and say, “but you have some really nice gear.”  Yeah, I do, but one key piece is missing – a good off hand weapon.

If my theory is correct, I should start to pass him again once I replace my crusty old Titansteel Destroyer. I believe that the real key to Fury Warrior DPS is how good BOTH your weapons are. The nerf, after all, was a direct hit to physical damage – and weapons have a HUGE impact on physical damage.

Try to take everything into account, however.  Arms and Fury are two very different playstyles.  As a Fury, I spend a lot more time waiting on cooldowns, where when I spec Arms, it’s everything I can to make sure I take advantage of every proc.  There is constantly some attack lit up that I could be using – it’s all about managing the GCD.

Heck, there are quite a few raiding warriors that are actually using dual spec.  Some fights in Ulduar are more suited to Arms than Fury and vice versa.  If you really, really want to min/max, you too can go this route.

Really, if you think about it, Blizzard did a nice job with these changes.  Arms is finally viable as a Raid DPS spec without totally destroying Fury.  Now we can actually choose a spec based on – wait for it – FUN!!

Before I get out of here, I believe I owe you guys a Power Auras setup export for Arms DPS.  Here it is – enjoy! It tracks your rend being up with a timer, and will let you know when Mortal Strike, Execute and Overpower are available. Thanks again to Drotara for teaching me the ways of Power Auras!

    PTD,

I’ve never played a warrior, so chiming in on this topic for me is based on the healer’s view from behind. All I know is, our raiding Arms warrior is kick-ass, and _always_ tops the DPS charts. We miss him when he’s not on raid night.

When I first joined the guild, I’d never run with DPS warriors, only tanks. Took me just a few heroic runs to learn “blade-storming” = I’m about to crank it, HoT me now or rez me later!

I think it’s the same as any question about spec – a brilliant player makes any spec shine, and a mediocre player isn’t saved by the ‘best’ spec. He plays the spec he loves, and it means he excels.

I’d have to agree with Kriyet on this one.

Pre 3.1 fury may have been the better spec overall as far as dps was concerned for most players. I would argue that it is the person sitting behind the monitor that can really make a class/spec shine.

If a players heart wasn’t in to what he was doing at the time he may not perform to the same degree of an comparably geared player of the same class; even if the talent spec was the same.

Okay…regarding your theory on having a good OH weapon, this might be a noobish question but I gotta ask:
Everything I’ve read about TG says that I should have a slower weap as OH. So I’ve been running around with Titansteel Destroyer as MH and Ironsoul in OH thinking that I’m following the “slow OH theory” when another Warrior sends me a whisper saying that I should switch my weaps. I asked why and explained that I’d read about the “slow OH” and he explained that Fury warrs should ALWAYS have the weap with higher dmg output in the MH.

So…my question is, should I rock Ironsoul as MH and Titansteel Destroyer in OH like I was advised, or should it be the other way around? Thanks

      Kriyet and Raine–

There is no doubt skill plays a part. I still believe there are empirical differences irrespective of skill in the specs. Ultimately, they are VERY close, and I will still normally take skill over spec.

      Dorkseid–

The higher damage weapon should always be in your main hand first. Just try it and you will see a big difference. I wouldn’t worry so much about speed, with 2 handers they’re ALL pretty slow. I pretty much look at just DPS and stats.

I love the warrior trees right about now, I’d like to think they are the closest to being balanced than the have ever been. And what is it with warriors playing druids? lol I know so many warriors that do lol

  5. Tigerfeet says:

You’re forgetting your ‘roots’ PTD! Druids LOVE an arms warrior, cats specifically. Arms applies Trauma, and if we don’t have to mangle that’s an extra 2-300 dps for us! Our arms warrior just switched to a different shift at work and isn’t raiding right now, and it makes me very, VERY sad :(

  6. PTD says:

Well, I have one of those situations where there is ALWAYS an arms warrior in the raid. Isn’t there another class that provides that same or a similar buff to bleeds?

  7. Yggdrasil says:

@ Dorkseid- Only 2 classes have to worry all that much over weapon swing speed, Rogues and Shamans. For anyone else, its pretty much Weapon DPS>anything else when selecting which to equip in mainhand.

@ PTD- I feel stupid for not being 100% certain on this, but I thought DPS Ferals brought the same effect…

I played an arms warrior to 70 and became a major pvper, I soon got bored though especially when blizzard introduced the overpowered death knight that starts at an unfair advantage. Basically I though it would be cool to still pvp after they came but as I went into the battleground I got death gripped and I was like wtf. It soon became clear to me that warriors were no longer good as they once were for pvp. i decided to try leveling in fury to 80 in my hardcore pvp set. I had two merciless gladiator axes dual wielded. I could solo 80 elites at 80 with my level 70 pvp set. I soon replaced that set with a level 80 heroic set and could not solo 80 elites anymore, its kind of frustrating 80 gear does not hold up as well. I soon got frustrated and made a pure pve spec (Fury). I soon found out raiding 10 man naxx and 25 was fun until I got to Ulduar which forced me to join an ulduar raiding guild. I like fury dps the best and smoke any arms warrior in dps now. I am dual speced to tank and deal great damage. I also totally agree with what you say that leveling in arms is better if you don’t got the gear. Fury is really hit rating based so if your going to do fury get AP and hit.

  9. Multikill says:

First of all the one who made this topic seems to be getting the picture. Fury warriors will surpass arms warriors when Ulduar geared or better.

I am very experienced fury warrior myself and fury warrior IS NOT hit reliable. Fury warriors should only get hitrating if they are below 190 hitrating. when they are above that hitrating they are yellow hitcapped and since HS actually works as your autoattack hitrating stack very bad and dont give much dps gain. This is why fury warriors actually is one of the melee classes who needs hitrating the least after hitting yellow hitcap. Strength>ArP>Crit>Expertice>Haste and hitrating

This is atleast in my experience the way prio stats :D
